Cheryl Guidry Tyiska

Cheryl Guidry TyiskaCheryl Guidry Tyiska is the Project Director for the Office for Victims of Crime Training and Technical Assistance Center (OVC TTAC). She began working at OVC TTAC as the Training Delivery Manager in January 2010. She became OVC TTAC's Project Director in June 2010, and has management oversight for the development and delivery of OVC's national strategy for training and technical assistance, standardized trainings (Instructor-Led training, National Victim Assistance Academy, Training by Request), customized training and technical assistance, professional development scholarships, crime victim/survivor scholarships, national and state conference support, the national OVC consultant network, and needs assessment and evaluation, as well as staff supervision and project operations.

Ms. Tyiska has worked in the field of victims' rights and services since 1984, in the national nonprofit and county government arenas. She also has extensive experience in disaster preparedness and response. Before joining OVC TTAC, Cheryl served as Director, Victim-Witness Services, Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office, Annapolis, MD (2007–2010), Interim Executive Director, National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, Washington, D.C.(2007), Interim Executive Director (09/06–12/06 and 03/07), Deputy Director (2005-2007), Director of Victim Services (1988-2005), and Volunteer Victim Advocate (1984-1988), National Organization for Victim Assistance, Alexandria, VA. She was a consultant technical writer/trainer for OVC TTAC and the DOJ Office on Violence Against Women, and is a member of the faculty of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. Cheryl is certified to perform forensic child sexual abuse interviews and danger/lethality assessments. She has worked directly with thousands of victims and survivors of crime and has responded on-site to numerous mass casualty events and coordinated responses to many others. She has published several articles and book chapters on victim- and disaster-related topics. She graduated from business college, earned a certificate in theology, has a BA in Humanities and is pursuing a Master's Degree in Distance Education and e-Learning. Ms. Tyiska is a survivor of both violent crime and disaster and approaches her work with victims and survivors of crime and disaster from both professional and personal perspectives. She is also an active hospice volunteer.
